Sometimes a weakened tooth requires more care than fillings or bonding.  In these cases, dental crowns are used to help restore patient smiles.  Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or a full gold crown.  While all of these types of crowns are effective, Dr. James Beck uses porcelain crowns on patients that want to restore their teeth, but are concerned about the cosmetic appearance of their smile.  Porcelain crowns are specifically designed and customized to both comfortably fit a patient's smile and to match the shade and texture of their natural teeth.  With porcelain crowns, your restoration will blend in with the rest of your smile.

At Mayflower Family Dentistry, placing a crown only takes two to three visits.  Anesthetic is provided to Dr. James Beck's patients in order to ensure that their procedure is relaxing and pain-free.  In order to install the crowns, the decay needs to be removed from the original tooth and the tooth then needs to be filed down to fit the crown.  A temporary crown is provided for patients in between appointments so that they can have a fully functioning, comfortable smile while they wait for their permanent solution.  Once the crown is custom created at a dental lab, it can be permanently placed on the patient's tooth.  With a permanent solution for your previously weakened tooth in place, you can return to your normal eating habits and oral hygiene routines. Porcelain crowns usually last ten to fifteen years.
