New Memoir Recalls Simpler Days of Nurses’ Training

Boettcher Details Nursing Student Life in “Nurses’ Caps and Angels’ Wings”

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Feb. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Retired nurse Ruth Boettcher relates her experience as a small-town girl arriving in 1960s Chicago for nursing school in her book, “Nurses’ Caps and Angels’ Wings - A Glimpse of Student Life in the 1960s,” published by M&B Global Solutions Inc.

The United States was in the midst of a social transition from postwar calm to civil rights and Vietnam era strife when Boettcher arrived in Chicago. The big city offered a culture shock for her at the all-female Rehtlaw Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she balanced a desire to spread their wings with the strict discipline demanded by house mothers and instructors.

Readers will enjoy Boettcher’s descriptions of health care environments that were typical for the day, but would make inspectors cringe by modern standards. She navigated her way through the challenges of relationships, school and potential pitfalls through determination, family morals and the guiding hand of a few angels along the way.

Boettcher and her classmates displayed a dedication to providing the best care possible in an era when personal touch played a more important role than advanced technology.
