PUYALLUP, Wash. - Dec. 7, 2021 - PRLog -- Award-winning artist Keith Burns has created Attack on the Arizona – a dramatic painting capturing the heart-stopping moment when Japanese Aichi D-3A1 dive-bombers launched their devastating attack on the Arizona – to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the infamous attack that brought America into World War II and to remember those Americans who fought and died at Pearl Harbor.

Christmas 1941 in America was overshadowed by war: just a few weeks before, Japan had launched their infamous pre-emptive strike on Pearl Harbor.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan. The Pacific Fleet had been at rest, with battleships safely anchored and personnel preparing for a day of light duty. A few clouds floated gently across an otherwise clear sky above them. America wasn't at war; no hostilities had been declared, and the nearest Japanese forces, as far as anyone knew, were over a thousand miles away. However, they were not alone; a Japanese fleet of six aircraft carriers had sailed in secret and was now less than 200 miles away. The calm was about to be broken.

As soon as the sun rose, the first wave of Japanese planes took off and flew towards Pearl Harbor. They arrived just before 08:00 a.m. to launch an all-out assault on the eight big ships moored along 'Battleship Row.' Torpedoes skimmed the water's surface in minutes, while armour-piercing bombs rained down from above. Simultaneously, others bombed and strafed the island's airfields, where only six American pilots managed to get airborne and fight back after being caught off guard.

California, as well as West Virginia and Oklahoma, were sunk by torpedoes and bombs. The forward magazine of the Arizona was perforated by a bomb, which exploded, killing 1,177 of the ship's crew. The second wave arrived just as the first wave had left, and the bombing and strafing resumed. In less than two hours, 2,403 people were murdered and hundreds were injured, while 18 US vessels were sunk or damaged, including eight battleships, three cruisers, and four destroyers. The port's infrastructure had been wrecked, a floating dock had sunk, and over 180 aircraft had been destroyed and hangars had been set ablaze at the island's airfields.
