By: Plane Junkie The YB-49 was a jet-powered evolution of the XB-35 and YB-35 Flying Wing designs, which were propeller-driven. It took off for the first time on October 22, 1947. In total, three airplanes were built. The plane set an unofficial endurance record by staying over 40,000 feet altitude for 6.5 hours during testing. A minor radar cross section was also visible on the plane. The second aircraft was tragically lost in flight on June 5, 1948, due to structural collapse. All of the crew members died. The first YB-49 took out from Muroc AFB in California on February 9, 1949, and landed at Andrews AFB near Washington, DC. The journey took 4 hours and 29 minutes. That flight is depicted in this print. When the B-2 was planned and developed, the knowledge and expertise obtained from the XB-35, YB-35, and YB-49 Flying Wing programs proved invaluable.
