By: Power Scuba Divers and onshore volunteers recovered 950 pounds of trash from the water. The most common garbage items found by volunteers included cans, bottles, plastic bags, and cigarette butts. Among the more notable items retrieved were a stereo system, a skateboard, an iPhone, a can of spam, a mountain bike, a microwave, a 5-inch artillery shell, and a porthole. A box of .44 magnum hollow-point bullets was brought up from the bottom and turned over to Harbor Police. Marshall Merrifield, Vice-Chairman of the San Diego Unified Port Commission, welcomed the all-volunteer group. Diving in San Diego Bay is typically forbidden, but Power Scuba obtains special permission from the Port of San Diego so divers can help remove trash and pollutants from iconic San Diego monuments like the USS Midway, the Star of India, the Soviet B-39 attack submarine, and Tuna Harbor. The San Diego Bay Underwater Cleanup is one of Power Scuba’s many efforts to help preserve and beautify our underwater ecosystem.
