June 5, 2015 - PRLog -- In today’s fast-paced world, every leader will inevitably face the prospect of addressing and implementing breakthrough change. Generally speaking, leaders and organizations rely on predictability and routine in everyday operations. As a result, employees and leaders alike often feel apprehensive when a breakthrough companywide change is announced. In Stacking the Deck, David S. Pottruck uses his vast experience as a leader and CEO to outline his nine-step “Stacking the Deck” process for successfully implementing and inspiring change within all levels of an organization. He aims to distill the techniques, skills, and lessons he has learned throughout his career into a logical and sequential approach for leading successful company-wide change.

Breakthrough change can be successfully implemented in any organization through a nine-step approach:

1. Establish the need to change and create a sense of urgency. First, leaders must address the psychological aspects of change and make the change necessary in the minds of those in the company who are most affected by it. This is the foundation for all other steps in the process.

2. Assemble and unify the leadership team. In order for change to be successfully implemented, it must be spearheaded by a team of innovation leaders within the company that help to make the change a reality.

3. Develop and communicate a clear and compelling vision of the future. The vision should be developed, outlined, and shared by the leadership team.

4. Plan ahead for known and unknown barriers. Although there are always unknown obstacles that cannot be anticipated, it is wise to have a plan in place for any obstacles that can be anticipated.

5. Create a workable plan. Leaders should clearly define a plan for executing the change in question, including answers to all the big questions that members of an organization may raise.

6. Partition the project and build momentum with early wins. A company-wide change initiative is a large undertaking for any organization. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, leaders can break the plan into small steps in order to gain overall momentum toward the final goal.

7. Define metrics, develop analytics, and share results. Each change initiative should have a specific set of metrics and analytics in place from the start. The results should be used as motivational tools to help the team gain more momentum.

8. Assess, recruit, and empower the broader team. After an inner leadership team has been established, a broader team of change advocates should be assembled once the change has been set in motion.

9. Test with pilots to increase success. Pilot projects, or test projects, will allow leaders to see whether the change initiative will thrive in the real world.
