A Torrance Optometry Center Answers a The Question: What is Glaucoma and what are The Symptoms?

Patients over 40 often ask, “What is Glaucoma and how do I know if I have it?” Well, It’s an important question to ask because, if left untreated, glaucoma can be detrimental to one's eye health.

TORRANCE, Calif. - Nov. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- TORRANCE, CA – November 13, 2013 – The owner of Advanced Eyecare Center, an optometry clinic located in Torrance, CA explains to his blog readers the symptoms and treatment of Glaucoma.  He says, “Glaucoma is caused by the build-up of pressure in the eyes or intra-ocular pressure.  This increased pressure can damage the optic nerve, thus, blocking the transmission of images to the brain.  The ultimate result is loss of vision or blindness.”  He then says, “People with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral or side vision.  People who have this condition complain of a sensation that seems like they are looking through a tunnel, but some may dismiss this symptom as a normal part of aging.”

Some cases of Glaucoma are worse than others, because with early detection the symptoms can be treated.  Dr. Michael Hansen says, “In more advanced cases of glaucoma, the patient may experience sudden eye pain, headache, blurred vision, or the appearance of halos around lights may occur. If you have any of the preceding symptoms, seek immediate medical care.”

The diagnosis of Glaucoma can be determined by a Torrance Optometry (http://advancedeyecarecenter.net/south-bay-area/torrance/) specialist.  Your doctor will have to dilate your pupils and perform a thorough exam of your optic nerve.  Dr. Hansen states, “In fact, photographs of the optic nerve can also be helpful to follow over time to check for eye pressure and a visual field test, if necessary, to determine if there is loss of side vision. Glaucoma tests are painless and take very little time.”

Hansen then talks about the treatment of Glaucoma.  He says, “Glaucoma treatment may include prescription eye drops, laser surgery, or microsurgery.  Eye drops for glaucoma help to reduce the build-up of fluid in the front of the eye.  These can also help lead to an outflow of fluids to maintain the pressure.  Eye drops can however cause allergy, redness of the eyes, brief stinging, blurred vision, and irritated eyes.”  He mentions that it is important to make sure any medicines prescribed for Glaucoma are reported to regular physician.

Michale Hansens blieves that, “The different treatment options have their advantages and disadvantages.  The best treatment for glaucoma is still early detection.”
