Darjeeling historically produced only black tea

Historically, Darjeeling produced only black teas, although many of the high-end first flush Darjeeling teas have a greener character that makes them share certain characteristics in common with green or oolong teas.  However, owning to surging popularity of white teas among Western countries in recent years, some of the tea plantations in the Darjeeling district have begun producing white tea

A style of its own vs. traditional Chinese styles

White tea originated in China, where the bulk of it is still produced, in Fujian province in particular.  Chinese white tea comes in well-defined grades and styles, the three most well-known of which are, in order of decreasing grade, silver needle, white peony, and longevity eyebrows.

A few of the white teas produced in Darjeeling are produced in the style of silver needle tea (bai hao yinzhen), the highest grade of Chinese white tea, produced exclusively from tips and leaf buds of the camellia sinensis plant.  However, most of the Darjeeling white teas do not fit into the Chinese classification scheme, and are in a style of their own, often highly variable from one tea to the next.
