Pooch the amazing black lab is featured on Lake County TV in his role as the recycled black lab who picks up what people won't. By: Keith Sanderson The video segment can be viewed on LCTV. See local listings for the LCTV channel, or visit the Lake County website. http://lakecnty.granicus.com/ Lake county is among the 100 most affluent counties in the United States as measured by per capita income. Many of the residents of the county are active in making sure the county and the communities in which they live reduce their impact on the environment. Sanderson believes that is one reason Max A. Pooch has drawn so much interest in this northern Illinois county. Sanderson says, "I believe using Max as a teaching tool is effective. He demonstrates that reducing litter is so easy even a dog can do it. Max also shows that through individual efforts much can be done to make the world a Greener Place." Max A. Pooch's story is not dissimilar to that of a discarded bottle. Max was also thrown away. He was abandoned at an animal control facility. If Lincolnshire, IL based Orphans of the Storm animal shelter hadn't rescued Max he would have been euthanized. His remains would have been thrown in a landfill alongside bottles and other things that still have a useful and productive life which are thoughtlessly discarded by humans. "That is perhaps the most important message Max has," says Sanderson. "We should all stop and think about the consequences of our actions before we act. Something as trivial as throwing a bottle on the roadside will impact us all; or abandoning a dog will create misery, suffering and perhaps the animal's death. When Max and Keith appear at events Keith first discusses the three Rs... Reusing, Repurposing and Recycling. He uses Max as an example. Max is a discarded dog that found an opportunity to be reused. Now, he has a new purpose in life and helps find and recycle cans and bottles. Max captures the audience's attention by seeking out and retrieving bottles and cans. This demonstration shows how a recycled retriever's instincts can be repurposed to seek and retrieve litter instead of game. David Mizejewski, blogger for the Animal Planet channel best summed up the benefit Max provides when he wrote, "This is so awesome. Check out the video about a "recycled" black lab that is now on a mission to recycle trash. I think this is such a clever and useful way to channel the lab's innate retrieving instict for the greater good."
