Perception of self is the basis of a new body of performance art

A dynamic and quirky piece with photography projection and live video recording

May 11, 2011 - PRLog -- The way dancers use their bodies and how they are viewed while performing is the basis of a new piece of theatre by a third year dance making and performance student.

Lauren Moore and her Crackerjack Dance Company will be performing ‘XY’ on Friday 27 May at the University’s Ellen Terry theatre and it is fundamentally about the body and how it connects with others particularly in 2 and 3D.

Lauren, originally from Nottingham, has been dancing from the age of three in the traditional forms of dance but in her teens, discovered hip hop and uses the energy and the physical demands it places on the body in her final year piece.

Lauren, 21, said:

“Performance is my passion and I find choreography captivating. I enjoy creating pieces for my dancers which explore their different qualities.

“My final year performance piece explores the philosophy of ‘seeing the self’ and how we perceive our own body and how that is viewed by others. My performance not only includes dance but photography projection and live video recording which is juxtaposed with live dancing bodies that reflect my body in various artistic ways.”

The main focus of the piece is the geometrics of the body which is evident in the choreography. For example, a duet between Lauren and a male dancer in her company is the way both male and female bodies interact while moving.

Lauren very much sees this performance as a multi-discipline art from which takes in a number of things that have influenced her and her interest in visual arts, digital dance and the relationship between live versus film, new media, cross art performance and experimental technology.

Her main influences are Russell Maliphant, Liz Aggiss, Ace Dance and Music and Rosemary Butcher.

After University, Lauren is hoping to go into teaching and sharing her passion for dance with other students and give them the benefit of her experiences as a professional dancer.
However, dancing remains her number one chosen career and would like to work with other dance companies to further her own journey as a dancer:

“It would be my dream to work with other dance companies such as Mobius Dance Theatre, Motionhouse and Ace Dance and Music. There is so much I want to do and combine my hobby of ashtanga yoga, which is something that has given me the ability to understand and focus on my body to create a more balanced body, mind and soul. I have found the regime of ashtanga yoga very useful in helping to enhance my dance performance and choreography.”

The Crackerjack Dance Company will be performing ‘XY’ on Friday 27 May at 6pm in the Ellen Terry theatre, Coventry University at  6pm. Tickets are £4 with £2 concessions and can be ordered on the ‘Crackerjack Dance Company’ facebook group or email lauren.jade.moore@hotmail.com to reserve tickets.
