When his lifelong friend Riley Jenkins is murdered, young Sheriff’s Deputy Sonny Watson is placed in charge of the investigation – a move that raises quite a few eyebrows across Cairo County, including those of Sonny himself. As he pursues his friend’s killer, Sonny eventually learns disturbing details surrounding the young man’s death – chief among them the shadowy involvement of one of the state’s most prominent, high-profile families. In the end, the young deputy is forced to contend with a host of different challenges – each more difficult than the last – as he’s faced with the sobering prospect of a grim new reality he’s not quite willing to embrace...

Taut and compelling, Dog Days is an enjoyable read. Ostensibly a murder mystery, author D.C. Moody’s intriguing tale is more a revealing treatise on the peculiar folkways and mores of a divided society still struggling to reconcile the dichotomy of its conflicted existence. In skillful fashion, Moody expounds on such issues as prejudice, racism, and small-town politics, all of which merge into an amalgamated mix of lies, deceit, and dark, hidden secrets. As he searches for the truth behind his friend’s murder, Sonny is forced to plumb the curious depths of that mix, ultimately learning that the real truth isn’t quite what he expected it to be. As such, the reader’s journey is likely to mirror his own – with each coming to the same disturbing conclusions about humanity’s truly unpredictable nature.

Surprisingly enlightening.
