In Vichy Water, author Calvin Barry Schwartz introduces the reader to Alex and Elvin, two lifelong friends who – though they travel quite different paths in life – share an exceptional bond that simultaneously distinguishes and unites them. While Alex is gradually drawn into a world of secret societies and clandestine government meetings with global ramifications, Elvin travels the world in search of himself, simultaneously exploring the virtues (and vices) of marriage, money, and self-gratification. In a story that transcends the natural boundaries of space and time, the friends ultimately come to a higher understanding not only of themselves, but also of the multi-faceted world that both surrounds and shapes them.

Drawn heavily from his personal experiences, Vichy Water is a rather complex, congested amalgamation of Schwartz’s quite interesting views and world travels. Interweaving logic and reason with philosophical empiricism, Schwartz sublimates his deft musings into a tale of friendship and trust, grounded in the steadfast core of an ever-changing world. Given the seemingly random complexities of his writing style, his thought process often proves difficult to follow, but the challenge is well worth it for the reader interested in discovering the hidden beauty of a world to which we all belong – but more often than not fail to recognize because we tend to view it through “untrained” eyes.

An intriguing debut effort, Vichy Water is a thought-provoking, multi-layered read. Definitely not for the casual observer seeking an oversimplified redux of the vagaries of life.
