By: Fouad Idbafdil Idbafdil's Journey: From Refugee to Athlete Refugee Team Born on February 9, 1988, Fouad Idbafdil was once part of Morocco's military. Later, he left the country to seek asylum in Sweden and then France. After gaining refugee status in France, Idbafdil leveraged his training and fitness and took to the track to train as an athlete. Idbafdil earned his position on the Athlete Refugee Team as a steeplechaser for competing in the 3000m event. At the Stade Raymond Troussier in Decines, France, Idbafdil scored 1101 with a best time of 8:34.72. He had a prior best time of 8:15.06 (score: 990) in 2021. He also received the prestigious International Olympic Committee scholarship to train for International Sporting Events. How Idbafdil Shows That Anyone Can Break Through Barriers Idbafdil is an example of a person who can outshine others, even when they are at a disadvantage in life. Since he started his journey as a refugee, Idbafdil has faced several hurdles. The first of these was finding a country that would grant him refuge.
