Union Cabinet approves Rs 7000 CR for construction of 6 IIT campuses

Each campus will have capability for housing 1200 students, starting from the academic year 2020-21
 
INDORE, India - Oct. 28, 2017 - PRLog -- The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs. 7,002 crore mega plan for construction of permanent campuses for six new IITs, across the country, to be completed by 31 March 2020. Each campus will have capability for housing 1200 students, starting from the academic year 2020-21, an official release said.

The Finance Minister in the Budget Speech 2014-2015 had announced set up of five new IITs in Jammu & Kashmir, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

In Andhra Pradesh State, the IIT campus will be located at Tirupati, and in Kerala State it is at Palakkad, in Karnataka it will be at Dharwad and in Chhattisgarh at Bhilai, apart from Jammu and Goa.

Further, in the Budget Speech 2015-2016, the finance ministry has announced the set up of an IIT in Karnataka state.

At present, these institutions are functioning from temporary campuses with a total capacity of 1530 students. After the construction of the campuses, this strength will be increased to 7,200.

The DPR for construction of the permanent campuses was prepared by a team from Mentor Institutes of these IITs, as per which Rs.20,304.88 crore were solicited for construction of the permanent campuses over a period of seven years.
