Vision Institute of Michigan Introduces Breakthrough Intraocular Lens for Cataract Patients

By: Vision Institute of Michigan
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - Nov. 3, 2016 - PRLog -- The Vision Institute of Michigan is pleased to announce they are now offering the first intraocular lens (IOL) that provides cataract patients with an extended depth-of-focus to help improve their sharpness of vision (visual acuity) at near, intermediate, and far distances, and may reduce the need for patients to wear contact lenses or glasses after cataract surgery.

The TECNIS® Symfony intraocular lens, by Abbott Medical Optics Inc., was recently approved by the FDA and is the first and only lens implant introduced in the U.S. market that can simultaneously correct presbyopia (the loss of power to use the eyes at the near point, without the aid of glasses) as well as astigmatism (a common vision condition that causes blurred vision), while improving the depth-of-focus for cataract patients.

"This lens can be life-changing, especially for people with cataracts," said Dr Jay Novetsky, Medical Director of the Vision Institute of Michigan. "This extended range-of-vision lens means that after cataract surgery, more patients will have the ability to see distances, near, far, and in between, comfortably and can go about daily activities like reading and driving without having to wear glasses."

Dr. Novetsky said the lens can be placed during refractive cataract surgery or in a refractive lens exchange to restore visual acuity and provide an extended range of focus for patients.

The new lens also offers enhanced potential for patients living with presbyopia. The lens can correct the age-related condition, which gradually distorts vision as the eye's natural lens loses its ability to flex and focus, by helping presbyopia-sufferers to focus with significant clarity and ease. The Symfony IOL also comes in Toric versions to help patients with astigmatism to achieve the same vision-correcting potential.

The Vision Institute of Michigan is excited to offer the new TECNIS Symfony lens as an option for many patients who've suffered from presbyopia, astigmatism, and up until now could not obtain extended depth of focus without glasses following cataract surgery.
