DETROIT - Aug. 18, 2016 - PRLog -- September is National Skin Awareness month, and the best time to transition your skincare routine from late summer to the crisp, autumn weather.

As the weather changes, so do your skincare needs. Summer can do a lot of damage to our skin. Exposure to the sun promotes premature aging, sun spots and wrinkles by breaking down collagen, making our skin lose firmness, elasticity, and suppleness. Exposure to insect repellents, sand, chlorine and other summer elements can also damage the skin.

"Each season has different effects on the skin, especially in Michigan, and requires different ingredients to help keep skin healthy and beautiful," said Mark Berkowitz, M.D., Chief Oculofacial and Reconstructive Surgeon at Accents Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spas. "The first step for fall is to repair summer's damage, then modify your cleansing and moisturizing regime for the drier, cooler weather."

Dr. Berkowitz has been helping Michigan residents keep their skin healthy and beautiful through every seasonal weather pattern for the last 10 years. Here are his top skincare tips for a smooth transition from the steamy late summer heat to the crisp fall air:

Damage Control/Exfoliate: Even the best moisturizers can't be absorbed through the dry, dead skin cells left behind after summer. Exfoliating regularly with body scrubs at home will smooth skin and improve the absorption of products. For the sensitive face area, fall is the perfect time to give your face a fresh start with a facial. Dr. Berkowitz recommends the HydraFacial® Elite, a new non-invasive, 30-minute high-tech treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, and extracts to remove impurities and dead skin cells while at the same time replenishing the skin with vital nutrients including antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid, without downtime or irritation.

Replenish/Moisturize: The sun depletes collagen, and it is difficult to replenish. Foods rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids (like salmon, tuna, walnuts, and flax seed) will help to repair cells and protect against further damage, but with the drier, cooler conditions in the fall, our skin needs richer, more emollient creams that help keep the skin elastic and lubricious. Dr. Berkowitz recommends Airelle® to repair sun damage, moisturize, and replenish collagen. Airelle, an all-natural, medical grade skincare line made from a proprietary blend of blueberries, is being praised for its ability to help nourish skin and reverse the signs of aging and sun damage.

Wear Gloves When Applying Facial Moisturizers: Wear latex or vinyl gloves when applying creams and lotions to the face. If you don't, up to half of the product can be absorbed into the skin on your hands.

Don't Ditch the Sunscreen: Sunscreen shouldn't be a seasonal practice. You need to wear sunscreen year-round (especially children), because the sun's Ultraviolet A rays (UVA cancer-causing wavelengths) are present year-round, even on cloudy fall days.
