Best friends Calista, Skyler, and Tabitha were nearly kidnapped by evil crime boss Wee Willie Sturgis when they were in the sixth grade. As the girls enter junior high school, they find themselves faced with a host of brand new challenges and difficulties – but their past is never too far behind them. Whether they want to or not, the young teens will eventually have to confront the demons that continue to haunt them, if they have any hope of a bright, promising future.

The logline for Finally Thirteen, by Richard Reed, is “Everything changes when you’re thirteen!”, a statement with which no junior high schooler will argue. Throughout the pages of his compelling debut novel, Read does a commendable job of highlighting the realities of teenage life. Despite the various advances in modern technology (social media, cell phones, etc.), teens will still be teens, and Finally Thirteen presents a thorough, detailed look into the minds and hearts of the next generation, showing not only how teens really think and feel, but how and why they act a result. Love, heartbreak, sexual intimacy, academic rigor – Read’s enlightening tale takes it all on, no holds barred.
