It’s a rare treat when a story can offer both superb character and plot development, when readers so often have to settle for one or the other. In the case of The Ash List, author John Anders is sure not to leave readers disappointed.

Fletcher is a wealthy holdover from Old Money; Martha is a devoted, humble social worker. One would never think such disparate souls would ever be attracted to one another, but their star-crossed paths result in marriage nonetheless. Such is how The Ash List begins, but where it ends is far from predictable. Anders introduces readers to a slew of different characters that help push the central storyline of his novel along, each adding to the overall intrigue of the story. He also does a superb job of preserving the suspense of his tale, such that when the truth is ultimately revealed, not many readers will honestly confess to having seen it coming.

For his debut effort, Anders does a commendable job of combining alluring characters with compelling storytelling, not an easy feat for newbie authors. Clichés like “edge of your seat thriller” and “page-turning delight” don’t quite do The Ash List justice, but they are accurate descriptions of this rather enjoyable offering.
