(IDSI) Design and Development of Training Games: Practical Guidelines from a Multidisciplinary Perspective is intended for an audience of professionals and academics interested in developing and researching learning games. It addresses topics such as: • the key elements of design and development that require particular attention from multiple disciplines to ensure success; • an overview of successful models and methods, and the tradeoffs made throughout the process, to guide development; • cohesive, multidisciplinary views of the issues that arise and of the techniques applied in order to produce effective learning games grounded in specific experiences, community consensus, and analysis of successful learning games that have already been released; • and the stories behind the games, to illustrate how final design and development decisions were reached. IDSI has a rich history in the design and development of serious games. We have worked closely with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in order to identify research-based best practices for the design of learning games. The work with the ONR ultimately produced the Damage Control Trainer, an instructionally rich, immersive gaming environment in which Navy recruits practice damage control skills, shipboard communication, and shipboard navigation – without the costs and risks associated with live trainings. The Damage Control Trainer has since been successfully adopted by the Navy’s Recruit Training Command. IDSI’s superiority in learning games designs is further substantiated by numerous awards and accolades which it has received, such as: the Best Game Award in the business category for the IITSEC Serious Games Showcase and Challenge; Training magazine's Outstanding Training Initiative Award; and Outstanding Achievement in Modeling and Simulation for Training Award from the National Training and Simulation Association. By understanding customer demands, through extensive research and innovation, and by engaging motivated and expert employees, IDSI has maintained its reputation as the premier gaming and organizational visionary.
