Detroit Public Library & the Detroit Historical Society Team Up to Commemorate the Library’s Upco

DETROIT - Jan. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- Detroit - The Detroit Public Library commemorates its upcoming 150^th Anniversary with a new exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum titled, The Detroit Public Library: 150 Years of Serving Detroit and Beyond.  The new exhibit will be on display from January 25 – April 13, 2014 in the Museum’s Community Gallery and serve as a kick-off to the library’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 2015.  The exhibit will provide an overview of the library’s history while featuring some of its most treasured possessions of cultural, historical, and literary significance.

“The Detroit Public Library is delighted to tell our story of 150 years of service through this exhibit,” said Jo Anne Mondowney, Executive Director, Detroit Public Library. “As DPL approaches its sesquicentennial celebration in 2015, we look back at our history, and we are also committed to being on the frontline in the future as we bring the best library service, regardless of format, to our citizens.”

For the past 150 years, the Detroit Public Library has provided library and information service to generations of Detroit residents.  From the renowned Main Library landmark to neighborhood branches all over the city; the Library has been an integral part of the city’s history and the Detroit Public Library: 150 Years of Serving Detroit and Beyond exhibit captures that spirit.  The new exhibit offers a rare opportunity to view select items from the Burton Historical Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the National Automotive History Collection, the E. Azalia Hackley Collection and the Lulu and Ernie Harwell Sports Collection.

The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time.
