DETROIT - Feb. 17, 2016 - PRLog -- The Detroit Public Library and the Friends of the Alger Theater present the thought-provoking documentary “The Amazing Nina Simone” on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at the Jefferson Branch Library located at 12350 E. Outer Drive (corner of E. Warren).  The program begins promptly at 5:30 p.m., followed by a discussion featuring special guest, Jeff L. Lieberman, the film’s director.

"We are excited to invite people to learn more about this legendary singer, songwriter, pianist and activist through a powerful film," says Friends of The Alger Theater Board President, Helen Broughton. "It speaks to the power of collaboration and community that this was made possible only through the generosity and dedication of our partner, Detroit Public Library, and the film’s director, Jeff Lieberman. It's really what Friends of the Alger is all about".

The Amazing Nina Simone premiers in Detroit as part of a seven-screening Michigan tour with dates at the Detroit Film Theater and The Michigan Theater in Jackson, Michigan.  The tour celebrates Black History month and could be considered the prelude to Women’s History Month.  The film tells the story behind the legendary singer, songwriter, pianist and cultural activist through over 50 exclusive and intimate interviews with people who knew her best.  The documentary details Nina Simone’s activism and has a direct link to Detroit history with her performance days after the 1967 riots, footage of which is included in the film.

The film has been widely celebrated and heralded by The New York Times, BBC News, LA Record and Telerama after several successful sold-out international film festivals and advance screenings.  It is also a Black Reel Awards 2016 Nominee for Outstanding Documentary.

The event is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited and refreshments will be served.  For more information about this event, call 313-481-1760.
