New Detroit Public Library Tour

DETROIT - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Detroit – The Detroit Public Library – Main Library is now offering a new docent-led tour called Discover the Wonders @ the Detroit Public Library starting Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate its upcoming 150^th Anniversary.  The Main Library, a renowned landmark designed by Cass Gilbert, will highlight all its unique art, architecture and collections throughout the historic building on the one hour tour.

The Discover the Wonders @ the Detroit Public Library tour is limited to 50 persons and will take place the first Saturday of each month beginning December 7, 2013.  Reservations are required to participate.

“My hopes with the new "Discover the Wonders of the Detroit Public Library Tour" is to bring awareness to Metro Detroit of the magnificent art, architecture, important historic collections, free programs, and PRIDE that the library brings to the community,” said Barbara Cohn, Head Docent.

“I have no doubt that when people take the tour they will be amazed and discover what a treasure the Detroit Public Library – Main Library truly is.”

Some of the treasures featured on the library tour include an array of murals, a mosaic comprised of 416,000 pieces of colored glass, a Pewabic fireplace, the oldest working elevator in the city of Detroit and so much more.  The Detroit Public Library’s Special Collections will also be featured on the tour including the Burton Historical Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Ernie Harwell Sports Collection and the E. Azalia Hackley Collection.
