Washington Redskins Should Change Name, Says PR Expert

MIAMI - Oct. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- MIAMI (Oct. 14, 2013) –What is the one topic that has been inciting comments from parties as disparate as President Barack Obama, the Oneida Indian Nation and shock jock Howard Stern? The Washington Redskins, a longstanding National Football League team, has been facing pressure to change its name for decades. This month, the Oneida Indian Nation began sponsoring a series of radio ads as part of a new campaign to have the name changed reigniting the controversy and thrusting it into center stage once again.

Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder has vowed to never change the name, but it may end up being an inevitable decision according to public relations consultant John P. David in Miami. His blog post on the topic (http://miamiprblog.com), explains that the controversy could end up affecting Snyder’s others business interests, such as Dick Clark Productions which produces various iconic television shows and award ceremonies.

“Given that the Redskins name controversy has the potential to infiltrate his other business interests and do harm beyond the gridiron, I think the decision to change the name becomes much clearer and easier to make. The downside risks prevail,” said David in his blog. David, president of David PR Group, has counseled executives on public relations and crisis communications for more than 20 years.

“As a business executive first and a football team owner second, my bet is that Snyder will eventually change the name,” said David.
