By: EUM Consultants With glamorous celebrities and fitness experts broadcasting that the secret to looking good and staying healthy, is to get a solid six to eight hours sleep per night, how did one of the most powerful and influential women in British history, Margaret Thatcher, apparently get by on a tiny four hours a night, and still manage to run a country? “The amount of sleep each person requires really depends on the individual, and the individuals sleeping pattern, as well as how busy they are during the day. If you have always had eight hours sleep a night, and suddenly could only have four, then yes you would be extremely tired, but humans can definitely train their bodies to get used to it” says Mark McAlear, managing Director of EUM Consultants. Many high profile public figures are said to all have had as little as four hours sleep every night. It is said that the famous Napoleon Bonaparte stated, when asked about how many hours he sleeps, that ‘six for a man, seven for a woman, and eight for a fool’. So is eight hours too much sleep? Or are these famous public figures just workaholics? So is the secret to success ‘work hard and sleep less’? “I am always surprised by how little sleep I can get by on” says Alex Tsimboykas “But when it is needed, I think I could get by on 4 hours asleep if I tried”. Perhaps the way forward to is to have less sleep, however, the odds are that most people would enjoy an extra hour in bed rather than an hour at the office. There is a clear divide throughout the public’s opinions when it comes to how much sleep is healthy. If you read magazines, you see celebrities all over the world are openly discussing their biggest secret to looking good - sleep. If you read newspapers and biographies, you see leaders and influential figures getting by on a mere 4 hours. So the final question, do you get more sleep for your looks or stay awake for your brain?
