Whilst most of us in the United Kingdom have experienced our first taste of summer with temperatures above 20 degrees, floods have caused devastation across Europe and Germany looks to be next. EUM Consultants discuss the environmental impact.

Extremely heavy rain has caused river banks to swell and flood across Europe, with many countries, including Hungary, declaring a state of emergency. After days of heavy rain, at least 7 people have died in the Czech Republic and two in Austria. “It’s devastating to think that with the technology we have, as well as defences, that heavy rain can still have such a huge impact on Europe, taking homes and lives from right under our feet” says Mark McAlear, Managing Director of EUM Consultants. “Global warming is not exactly latest news, and precautions for extreme weather really need to be put in place, and it should not take a disaster like these floods to make it happen. We have the skills to calculate potential hazards in terms of flooding, and we know what we can do to prevent river banks bursting” agrees Alex Tsimboykas, Sales Director of EUM Consultants. Over 3,000 people have had to evacuate in some areas in Europe, animals in zoos have had to be tranquilised and transported, sandbags have been placed around areas at risk and even sewage companies have had to close as a precaution.

The heavy rain in the last few days has caused extreme damage, as well as records. In the town of Passau floodwaters reached levels not seen for over 300 years The German chancellor has promised almost £80 million in emergency aid to help flood affected areas, as well as drafting in the army to help with flood defences. “With so many places in a state of emergency, it is going to take millions to fix, to build homes, schools and buildings again, flood defences need to be installed sooner rather than later. The weather is becoming more extreme every year, with shorter and shorter distances between extreme events. The sooner they are put into place, the more lives that are safe as well as homes, livestock and businesses” says Mark McAlear, Managing Director of EUM Consultants.

With months’ worth of rain falling in just a few days, many places across Europe are on standstill. Clearly defences need to be put in place. Floods similar to those in the last few days were in Europe in 2002, where 17 lives were taken along with the cost of £17 billion pounds (20 bn eauros). “To avoid this happening again, something needs to be done now” says Alex Tsimboykas, Sales Director of EUM Consultants.
