Announcing Dr. Tomi Sawyer as Keynote Speaker at CHI’s Structure-Based Drug Design Conference

Drugging the Undruggable: Transforming Nature’s α-Helix into Breakthrough Medicines will be discussed at CHI's 13th Annual Structure-Based Drug Design Conference this coming June.

NEEDHAM, Mass. - March 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Cambridge Healthtech Institute (CHI), the leading provider of educational conferences and reports for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, today announced scientific thought-leader and renowned author Tomi Sawyer, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker at its annual Structure-Based Drug Design conference to be held on June 19-21, 2013 in Boston, MA.

The theme of the event is ‘Genome to Drug Lead with Big Data Approach' and Dr. Tomi Sawyer will be presenting on Thursday, June 20 at 8:40 a.m. about advancements in stapled peptide technology to transform Nature’s α-helix into breakthrough medicines.  A major challenge of drug discovery has been to successfully modulate the biological properties of those therapeutic targets deemed “undruggable” as defined relative to small-molecules.  He brings a wealth of practical experience and leading edge research applications for the delegates in attendance.

Dr. Sawyer is currently Chief Scientific Officer, SVP Discovery & Innovative Technologies, Aileron Therapeutics (Cambridge, Mass.). He was previously Senior Director, Pfizer Research Technology Center (Cambridge, Mass.) and concurrently served on Pfizer’s Global Chemistry Leadership Team. In this capacity, Dr. Sawyer was responsible for drug discovery at the Cambridge facility, as well as global chemistry initiatives such as kinase-targeted innovative technologies. Prior to his tenure at Pfizer, he held several leadership positions in drug discovery at ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, including Senior Vice-President, Drug Discovery. He began his career at The Upjohn Company as a peptide chemistry and drug design scientist before moving on to a position at Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert Company where he last served as Head, Structure-Based Design Chemistry

Dr. Sawyer currently holds academic and research advisory appointments at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Sawyer received a B.S. with Honors in chemistry from Moorhead State University and a Ph.D. with Distinction in organic chemistry from the University of Arizona.
