Follow on Google News | Catherine Asquith, Art Director: Interview on The Wrighter“I guess my first trip to New York in 1995 was probably the catalyst for my eventual 'entry' into this very unique world.” – Catherine Asquith
By: Selah Haki When asked about her favorite artist, Asquith responded, “The American realist painter, Edward Hopper (1882 - 1967). I think with any 'favorite' it's about how you are introduced to that artist. I took a unit in American Art, in my undergad degree and the way in which my lecturer presented Hopper just impressed me. Then when I finally saw his work, at The Whitney and MOMA, well, I was a committed fan.” According to the Catherine Asquith Gallery website, the gallery was established in 2003, and its primary aims is to provide the Australian and international audience with a variety of exemplary artist practices, working within the genres of landscape, abstraction and figuration. Many of the gallery's represented artists have been exhibiting for in excess of a decade, and are well represented in significant public and corporate collections throughout Australia, and internationally. Forty artists are represented and include the disciplines of painting, photography, and sculpture. On the discussion about her interests outside of art, Asquith stated, “Owning and operating an art gallery is a full time commitment, it's really a 'marriage' of sorts. Any travel now will invariably include a work related event, such as an international art fair, or a visit to an artist's studio interstate, or attendance at a biennale. I search out literature and film which has an 'art content'.” Kobina Wright, creator and contributor of the blog, The Wrighter, is a Southern California native with a BA in Communications from California State University, Fullerton. She has written several books including “Raise the Red Teddy: A Single Mother’s Guide to Dating;” “The Hodaoa-Anibo Dictionary;” “50” and “A Crime And A Simplification of Something Sublime.” Starting next month, Wright will exhibit her installation inspired by the Hodaoa-Anibo language and Tibetan Prayer Flags, through the traveling group show titled Circus Terminal, Thailand, which exhibits November 28th through December 30th in the city of Chiang Mai.
