By: BAM Outsource Don’t Act! Trying to be someone else just gives you another thing to think about and try to remember. The best thing to aim for is to be yourself when you’re relaxed and around friends. It’s unlikely that you have trouble talking then so you want to learn and practice to reach that level of confidence. Being yourself and exuding natural confidence is something we try to teach everyone at BAM Outsource, it’s the best way to look comfortable and relaxed. Prepare to be flexible You never want to learn a speech off by heart as it will sound stilted but that also means that each time you give a speech it will naturally be slightly different. You need to know your points well enough that you could do them in any order as you might well accidentally say one before another and need to come back. If you want to be ultra prepared deliberately practice saying your points out of order so you’re not thrown on the day. Modulate your voice When you learn a presentation or speech well, there is a risk that your voice becomes monotonous. Spend 10 minutes listening to someone on the radio and listen to when their tone of voice changes. It’s something that you won’t necessarily notice in yourself and is easier to hear in others. Once you’ve worked out what those changes are, check that you’re doing the same. Remember, if you’re trying to get someone excited about something, you need to sound excited! Practice connecting with your audience. Building a relationship is essential in our industry and connecting with the customer is something we take great pride of at BAM Outsource. Most of that connection comes from eye contact. It’s important to know your presentation well enough that you can look up plenty and involve your audience. If it’s something you find really hard then write it into your speech. At a natural pause, draw a pair of glasses and you’ll remember to look up! An excellent public speaker manages to find the balance between being prepared and sounding natural. With more practice and confidence in your abilities you will start to become more relaxed and comfortable. BAM Outsource wishes you luck in your all of your future speaking engagements.
