By: BAM Outsource A Yale research team has shown that work related stress, when managed correctly, can improve your performance and productivity. We’re all ears! Firstly the team tells us that we need to recognise that stress is simply a feeling and rather than being a negative it shows just how much you care about the thing that is causing you anxiety. The amount of stress that you feel is directly related to the importance you place on a task. Justin Menkes author of ‘Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others’ says that we must understand that worry is not a cause for panic but just an indicator of how important something is to you. Ok, that makes sense to us at BAM Outsource, now what do we do? Next we’re told that we need to focus on what we can control, and try to ignore that which we can’t. Allow yourself time to work out what is worrying you and write down the things that you can do something about on one list and the things you can’t on another. After some practice you’ll be able to do this mentally. Once you stop wasting time on the things you can’t control you’ll have more time for those that you can. Our productivity is on the up already! We talk a lot at BAM Outsource about mentor relationships, we like to surround ourselves with great mentors. It seems that this network is essential in a time of stress. You need to find someone who is removed from the situation to offer you impartial and balanced advice. When you’re deeply involved it is incredibly difficult to look at things objectively. Your support network will offer you suggestions that you wouldn’t think of yourself. Finally it’s important to get used to stressful situations. If you’re not used to stress, you’ll panic when you experience it. If you find public speaking stressful then offer yourself up for small opportunities to speak when it doesn’t really matter if it goes wrong.
