The American Society of Appraisers to Offer Personal Property Appraisal Courses at Top UniversitiesThe American Society of Appraisers will offer courses at the Rhode Island School of Design Continuing Education, Pratt Institute and the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies.
PP201: Introduction to Personal Property Valuation (Pratt Institute: September 13-16. RISD: September 20-23. University of Chicago: October 17-20) The introductory class covers general valuation theory, basic appraisal terminology, and economic concepts that apply to valuation. Students will receive an overview of the appraisal process and an introduction to the ethical concerns of the appraiser. Prerequisite for PP/GJ POV202. PP202: Personal Property Valuation Methodology- (RISD: October 25-28. Pratt Institute: November 15-18. University of Chicago: November 28-December 1) The second class explores the development of the scope of work for appraisal assignments, including methods of research and analysis of markets, and approaches to value. PP/GJ 202 also provides students with expanded appraisal terminology. Prerequisite for PP/GJ POV203. PP203: Personal Property Valuation—Report Writing (University of Chicago: January 16-19. RISD: February 21-24. Pratt Institute: February 28-March 3.) The appraisal report-writing course provides students with the basics of written appraisal report preparation. In class, the instructor reviews the required parts of an appraisal in relation to the preparation of the final document. Students use the terms they acquired in POV 201 and the methodology they learned in POV 202 in class exercises to complete their appraisal and prepare an appraisal report for review by the instructor. PP204: Personal Property Valuation—The Legal and Commercial Environment (RISD: March 14-17. University of Chicago: April 10-13. Pratt Institute: May 9-12.) The PP/GJ204 course introduces students to compliance with laws and regulations in order for them to conduct their appraisal practices. Topics that are covered include expanded applications of Fair Market Value, professional ethics and standards, insights into the auction market, how appraisers work with the insurance industry, and how tort law affects appraisers. POV 204 also examines the legal court precedents on which many appraisal issues are based. PMSE 100PP: Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (RISD: March 18-19. Pratt Institute: May 13-14.) This course is designed for appraisers of personal property seeking or needing to demonstrate tested knowledge of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice document promulgated by the Appraisal Standards Board of the Appraisal Foundation.
