5 Strategies For Keeping Fit That Actually Work During The Holidays

Don’t Give Up On Your Weight Loss Commitments Even If You Slip

Nov. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- There’s a reason why more people give up on their diet programs or workout regimens in December than any other time of the year…the holidays.  With office parties, family gatherings, last-minute shopping and other interferences, staying true to one’s self can be a burden.

Mark Myers, fitness services manager of Spectrum Athletic Clubs in El Segundo, offers these 5 strategies for maintaining your diet and fitness goals during the hectic holiday season:

1.     PLAN YOUR MEALS – and implement portion control.  Start by using a salad plate instead of a dinner plate at buffet style gatherings.  Only return for a small amount of second helpings 20 minutes or more after your initial servings. This will allow for digestion and give your brain enough time to process your level of hunger.  Contrary to what mom says, you don’t have to finish everything on your plate. Instead, place leftovers into single serving packages and eat them at another time.  Know in advance what you are going to eat and when you are going to eat it.  Most people overeat during the holidays because they do not pre-plan and practice control.

2.     STAY HYDRATED – Drink fluids with zero or low calories and no caffeine.  Many people drink alcohol or eat in excess but don't do a very good job of staying hydrated.  Water helps keep everything in balance.  It is also responsible for helping to move excess waste products out of the body.

3.    DON’T STOP EXERCISING – If you are traveling or have less time consider changing your routine or intensity.  There are many things you can do in less than 30 minutes within a 6’ by 6’ space.  If you can’t complete your normal routine, shorten it but add more intensity!

4.     GET PLENTY OF SLEEP – Much of the damage you do everyday is repaired at night.  If you overdo it, make sure you get a good night’s sleep.

5.     FORGIVE YOURSELF – Many people throw in the towel if they stray from their ideal.  Instead, go back on track and don’t beat yourself.  You cannot change the past, only the present.

“The holidays should be fun and joyful and they can be, even when you’re trying to stay true to your diet and fitness regimens,” said Myers.  “The key is setting realistic goals and giving yourself a break should you make a mistake.”
