Aug. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Whilst women are often stereotypically seen as the gender most likely to be in search of serious relationships, one of the UK's leading independent celebrity fashion websites carried out a poll that has revealed the opposite, with new figures showing that a third of single women admit to having had 'friends with benefits' at some point.

The research was conducted by www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk and 2,168 women, each of whom was single and over the age of 21, were polled. Initially, respondents were asked "Do you have, or have you had, friends from the opposite sex?", to which, 92% answered 'yes'.

The female respondents were then asked to specify the kind of relationships they had with their male friends and were asked to choose all that applied from a list of possible answers. The top five answers were as follows:

1) Just friends          62%
2) Friends 'with benefits'          34%
3) Ex girlfriend/ boyfriend          29%
4) Colleague          23%
5) Best friend          19%

The respondents who admitted to having had a friend 'with benefits' were then asked to explain the reason for their decision to cross that line. More than half, 51%, admitted doing so because they were not looking for a serious relationship, whilst 22% said it 'wasn't planned'.

A further 19% said that they just 'wanted to have fun' and 8% admitted that they had feelings for that person and were 'hoping for more'.

Andy Barr, Marketing Director of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented on the findings:

"The whole idea of 'friends with benefits' isn't necessarily a new concept, but it's one that is certainly growing in popularity. I think people are a lot more laid back about relationships now and often, a relationship started with a friend can go on to be a stronger one. However, people also need to be careful not to ruin friendships."

He continued:

"As long as you're happy with the kind of relationship you're in, I guess that all that matters! Perhaps people shouldn't automatically think that all women want to settle down right away and have a serious relationships, as that's quite obviously not the case".
