Dec. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- NEWTON, NJ: Transition US is excited to announce that Transition Newton has become the 77th official Transition Initiative in the United States. Transition Initiatives start when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges and opportunities of peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis? This small team of people begins by forming an initiating group and then adopts the Transition Model with the intention of engaging a significant proportion of the people in their community to kick off a Transition Initiative.

Transition Newton’s initial contact person is Eric Derby and their Initiating Steering Committee is comprised of a diverse set of individuals, each with deep roots in the local community. Eric said, “What excites us most about this milestone is the publicity of being the 1st Transition Town in NJ inspiring others to join in the challenges, fun and rewards of figuring out how to transition our communities.“ He added that, “We are planning a series of workshops on food storage & preservation. The 1st of the series will focus on fermentation. Then, we will work on canning, seed saving etc throughout the series. We have already had wonderful workshops on "how to sharpen just about anything; shovels, woodworking tools, knives and the list goes on", a very successful "build your own rain barrel" workshop. We are also planning a Biochar, and Building Earth Ovens workshops. We have grown our monthly awareness raising with our film series. We have and continue to network with our community through speaking engagements, attending meetings of local groups and being present and exhibiting at local fairs & festivals.”
