Follow on Google News | Final Countdown is on for Auction of Rare 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 PrototypeNever before seen in public, the coveted 1965 Shelby GT350 Prototype #5S319 will find a new home after 30 years in a private collection.
By: Mark Allen The Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) has verified the pedigree of the 5S319 as it will be highlighted in the prototype section of the new Shelby American World Registry coming out later this year. "SAAC has already received numerous inquiries about 5S319 from prospective buyers of this unique 1965 GT350," says Howard Pardee, SAAC's registrar for the '65/'66 GT350's. The prized '65 Shelby GT350's currently command a strong six figures in today's muscle car marketplace, and prototypes like the 5S319 are highly coveted. As a testament, the current owner has held this car as a trophy in his private collection for the last 30 years. (View the car online http://www.mecum.com/ Mecum Auctions claims the 5S319 is one of the most historically significant Shelby Mustangs. This one-of-a-kind car is a proven developmental link between the first two years of Carroll Shelby's famed GT350's. The 5S319 Shelby will be featured on Mecum's "Muscle Cars and More" airing August 13 & 14 on Discovery's HD Theater. Ford factory stylist, Charles McHose, drove the 5S319 while he was designing the 1967 GT350's and GT500's with Shelby American. As a prototype, Shelby fitted the 5S319 with a rear spoiler for high-speed stability. In 1967, Shelby introduced the new GT's with factory rear spoilers, which were an instant hit with muscle car buyers. The 5S319 may be the first ever American manufactured car with a factory rear spoiler. That year, Shelby GT350's dominated the race circuit, winning four of the six SCCA division championships. Ken Miles and Jerry Titus were behind the wheel for the Shelby American factory team that year, with Titus taking the checkered flag at the American Road Race of Champions.
