Revolutionizing The Business Of Architecture In The 21st Century and Beyond

Refining, restyling and repackaging the value of architectural service to society

June 13, 2010 - PRLog -- The time has come for us to revolutionize the art of business within the architectural profession.  It is so funny that out of all the foundational professions, architecture is the only profession lagging behind. We are in the 21st century but we are still conducting our practices from the early 19th century.  We have come a long way with our technology on how we can design complex buildings in half the time, cheaper construction methods and better presentations; but it seems to me that as time go on architects are stripped of there responsibilities because we are too busy to fight for the life of architecture.

Most architects are so consumed with out designing each other that the proverbial rug is slowly being pulled out from under us and the next generation of architects.  Just like how we can refine and advance better ways to create and draw complex buildings, we can create ways to sustain our value to the general public and supply our genius to a residential market that has been neglected for decades.

Most residential designs come from people online who do not know the meaning of scale and proportion much less the study and core principles that make our profession great.  I believe in order for us to make a positive and lasting impact, we have to first start with the institutions who are misleading the future generation of architects; by making them believe that they will become the next preeminent architect fresh out of school. Institutions have to also cease from telling students that there is no money in architecture and instead tell them how to become more business savvy and relevant in the industry they serve.

There is nothing wrong with dreaming, but when the ducks are not in a row all efforts become senseless; most preeminent architects got their start from residential architecture, so why has the profession abandoned this important element in expressing our creativity.  If we do not make a change now, there will be a time when not even online floor plans will be relevant to society and we ourselves will buy into the toxic junk we have allowed to accumulate over the years through neglect. Architects and designers need to become more united and proactive in educating the public on how we contribute to the functions of modern civilization.  We need to stop hiding in the dark, wasting quality time on meaningless competitions, having high expectations of people giving us work and create our own work with our knowledge and skills.  I am tired of being a line item how about you?  Neil O. Campbell
