Old California Lantern Company Introduces New “Glass-On-Glass” Monarch Butterfly Lantern

May 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Introducing the latest addition to the popular eucalyptus-leaf lantern design from Old California Lantern Company: the Monarch butterfly lantern. After hearing about the incredible migration of the Monarch butterfly to California’s Central Coast, owner Tom Richard was inspired to add a butterfly to the popular eucalyptus leaf filigree from the company’s portfolio.
“Although the eucalyptus motif is a common design element in the Arts and Crafts movement—found everywhere from fabrics to frieze borders—some people saw the leaf as a chili pepper instead,” recalls Richard. “Once I heard about the Monarch butterfly migration, I felt adding the butterfly would be the perfect touch while clarifying the design.”
When commissioned by a prominent Anaheim hotel to create four large lanterns for their landscaped pool area, the client loved the existing butterfly design but asked for something more.
“When they asked if the butterflies could have orange glass behind them, we knew we had to be creative,” says Richard. “We were very pleased with the finished product—as was the client.”
The team at Old California Lantern Company conceptualized a new design that featured three-dimensional butterflies in a “glass-on-glass” technique, which brought the fixtures to life. The Monarch butterflies are fitted with stained glass before being soldered on to the eucalyptus-leaf filigree, giving the fixtures a unique spirit, as if they alighted on the lantern to rest from their long migration flight. The meticulous design detail and unmatched quality of manufacture make these lanterns incredibly beautiful during the day, but also explode with color when illuminated at night.
