About the Juneteenth Legacy Project "The Juneteenth Legacy Project will serve as a platform for illuminating and amplifying a complete story of Juneteenth—helping make the invisible visible and giving voice to the voiceless—remembering and celebrating the contributions of Black freedmen and formerly enslaved people who fought for their freedom and the freedom of others," says Sam Collins, local historian and co-chair of the Juneteenth Legacy Project. About Juneteenth Juneteenth commemorates Union Army General Gordon Granger's proclamation issued Juneteenth is now observed annually on June 19,1865 celebrating the emancipation of those enslaved in the United States. As of June 15, 2021, it has been observed as a national holiday. "Juneteenth is not about enslavement and suffering," Collins said. "Juneteenth is about a spirit of renewal that celebrates freedom and opportunity. Absolute equality is not about equal results but about creating a society that supports all to become their very best selves to benefit the collective community." About Nia Cultural Center Nia Cultural Center is a community-based non-profit agency incorporated in the State of Texas in 1992. Founded by Sue Johnson it is located on Galveston Island, Nia is an educational organization with activities and programs focused on culture and history and their impacts on the lives of children, youth, and families.
