Fluid Life Announces Launch of SEM-EDS Large Particle Analysis

EDMONTON, Alberta - April 13, 2021 - PRLog -- Fluid Life, a leading provider of equipment reliability solutions and lubrication analysis, is excited to announce the addition of SEM-EDS analysis (Scanning Electron Microscopy – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) as part of its state-of-the-art laboratory services offerings.

Large particle analysis is a critical (but often neglected) element of an effective oil analysis and condition monitoring program. These large particles (>10um) carry critical information about the health and contamination level of the equipment. SEM-EDS can determine the elemental composition, size and shape of each specific particle, eliminating the guess work associated with interpreting ICP or WDXRF spectrometry.

Craig Winterfield, Vice President – Laboratory Services stated, "Traditional spectrometry-based oil analysis lumps all the wear and contamination particles present in a sample together into one report, which limits its overall usefulness. Fluid Life has combined automated SEM-EDS analysis with practical engineering domain knowledge to create a solution that overcomes these limitations."

By analyzing hundreds of particles individually and assessing their elemental composition, size and wear modes in the context of more than 40 years of predictive maintenance domain knowledge, Fluid Life has created a unique tool to diagnose machinery health and provide actionable recommendations. This process is an industry first collaboration combining the skills of analytical chemists, engineering and the practical knowledge of in-house heavy-duty mechanics.

SEM-EDS can be used to detect the presence of abnormal wear modes, the early onset of large wear particles and determine the specific composition of wear and contamination allowing you to prevent costly failures and unplanned downtime.

"This method and Fluid Life's world class laboratory automation enables complete SEM analysis and critical component protection to become a cost-effective pillar of your ROUTINE condition monitoring program," said Jeff Walkup, Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

SEM-EDS is available on:
  • Oils
  • Greases
  • Spinner Filter Cake
  • Oil Filter Debris
