EqOpTech bridges the digital divide with Community Grant from Los Altos Community Foundation

Equal Opportunity Technology (or EqOpTech) enables free, equal access to technology and education while engaging student volunteers to refurbish, repair computers and teach STEM classes to benefit at-risk students.

LOS ALTOS, Calif. - Dec. 24, 2020 - PRLog -- OpTech, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $4,000 grant from Los Altos Community Foundation (LACF). These funds will support the "Bridging the Digital Divide with Refurbished Computers" Program.

EqOpTech's mission is to make technology available and accessible to all by giving away computers in underserved communities while engaging interns to refurbish, repair computers and teach STEM classes to benefit at-risk students. The organization continues to fight for tech access amid COVID-19 as classes move online. EqOpTech deploys computers to support students' virtual learning programs in Los Altos, Mountain View, Palo Alto and neighboring cities.

Despite the ubiquity of technology in Silicon Valley, students from low income families do not have easy access to computers and yet, there is an abundance of outdated computers slated to go to e-waste. EqOpTech empowers students to refurbish and redeploy obsolete/unwanted laptops and put them back into productive use for students in need. EqOpTech interns are trained to refurbish, upgrade and reinstall all operating systems, drivers, and software to restore the computer to its original full functionality. This grant will contribute towards missing or defective laptop components such as power adapters, hard disk drives, memories and batteries for the computer refurbishing program. With refurbished computers, at-risk students will now have easy access to computers for distance learning from attending virtual classes via Zoom or Meet to collaborating with classmates in online research to attending various online educational programs.

"We would like to thank LACF for supporting our computer reuse program," said Terence Lee, EqOpTech's Founder. "This will allow us to replace defective computer components and give hundreds of computers a purposeful second life - even more critical now during the pandemic with distance learning and computer supply chain shortage."

"LACF's grants help nonprofits tackle important community issues and bring hope to local residents both now and for the long-term," said Adin Miller, LACF's executive director according to its December 4, 2020 Press Release. "We value our role in funding nonprofit organizations to better serve and improve our community during the pandemic and beyond."
