ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - June 14, 2019 - PRLog -- Rose Ann and Chuck Points, owners of St. Augustine Sailing Enterprises, Inc. (https://www.sta-sail.com/) and their many other local sailing enthusiast businesses, will host 12 students from Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (https://www.fsdbk12.org/) (FSDB) during a day of sailing instruction with an onsite classroom schedule, discussion groups, demonstrations, and on-board time on the water.

On Thursday, June 20 from 10:30 am until 11:30 am, the classroom discussion will utilize customized, handheld scale models of sailboats with a full range of moving parts to learn key features of sailing. Also, knot tying will be learned with small blocks, ropes and cleats which each student will receive as a gift. A Q&A session will also be held. From 11:30 am until 12 pm noon, lunch will be served, and at 12:30 pm students will depart on four sailing vessels to learn about points of sail with hands on activities in tying different knots, leaning more about parts of the boat and their uses, among others. Plans include providing each student with a short time at the helm to experience being the master of the vessel.

All activities will be held at St. Augustine Sailing headquarters, Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor, 3076 Harbor Drive in St. Augustine including classroom time at the adjacent Northeast Florida Marlin Association. The Association donated its covered, outdoor seating area for the instructional portion of the student event and lunch.

The program is part of the FSDB Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) Summer Academy for ninth through 12th grade students who are blind/visually impaired, deaf/hard of hearing, or deafblind students at 207 North San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine.

According to Rose Ann Points, company crew members and area captains will volunteer their time during all activities with one-on-one student instruction while working with chaperones from the school.

"Our companies are all involved with helping people learn how to sail and improve their abilities from beginners to seasoned sailors. The upcoming program with students is just one way we give back to those who may never experience sailing, the techniques, and the water in such a freeing environment with the wind and nature," she said. The Points also donate their time, fleet of sailing vessels, and expertise to fundraisers with St. Augustine Sailing Sisters and Betty Griffin Center, among others.
