SMART Recovery Webinar with Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky, Love & Addiction Revisited

Oct. 5, 2018 - PRLog -- Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky will join SMART Recovery for a special event webinar to discuss the concept of behavioral addictions with a focus on love and relationships. They were at the forefront of exploring the idea that addiction is not confined to particular substances but is a human phenomenon that can develop along a spectrum of severity in the relationships we form – with others, with substances, or with behaviors and activities.

Initially, the ideas expressed by Dr. Peele and Mr. Brodsky were shocking and considered heretical. However, slowly but surely, the premises from their ground-breaking book, Love and Addiction, in 1975, have come to be accepted as common knowledge in the psychology and treatment professions and continue to spread into the common lexicon. People recognize more and more that emotional, cognitive, social and cultural factors all play a role. We are witnessing an evolution in thought regarding addiction, and the approaches to helping those with addictions are starting to shift as well.

Here, we will take a look at how well these theories have held up over time and discuss how new knowledge and new social contexts have developed. Stanton Peele, Ph.D., J.D., is a seminal figure in the field of addiction and recovery. Dr. Peele is a pioneer in applying addiction concepts to include self-cure, harm reduction, and social-environmental causes of addiction. His online Life Process Program has been developed to extend availability of treatment by leveraging technology.  His most recent book, with Ilse Thompson, is Recover! Stop Thinking Like an Addict and Reclaim Your Life with The Life Process. Since publication of Love and Addiction in 1975, he has written twelve books and over 250 professional and popular articles. He continues to lecture internationally on the meaning, treatment, and future of addiction. Archie Brodsky is co-founder of the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at Harvard Medical School. In addition to Love and Addiction he has co-authored 15 books, including The Truth about Addiction and Recovery (with Stanton Peele), Preventing Boundary Violations in Clinical Practice, and Clinical Supervision in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling. Mr. Brodsky is on the board of directors of The Influence Foundation, which recently launched the website Filtermag.org  to advocate for rational and compassionate approaches to drug use, drug policy, and human rights. He is a former chair of the Human Rights Committee at Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
