Follow on Google News | This British Army Officer has a Lightsabre. No, reallySaffron Walden based Janaway is celebrating the publication of Resistance, the second instalment of his End of Empire fantasy trilogy in which a compelling Tolkeinesque cast lives alongside human beings – or rather used to live alongside – until a coalition joined forces to wipe humanity from the face of the planet. As the book opens, humankind has all but vanished. Book 1, Vanquished, chronicled a vicious and efficiently executed war. Book 2, Resistance, charts its aftermath. Janaway is well placed to provide a credible and electrifying backdrop having spent a decade travelling the world with the British Army. He has seen military campaigns from an insider's view and paints compelling pictures of different theatres of war, from the well-trained fighting corps to the hapless civilian populations caught in the confusion and devastation of battle. It is not only the reality and aftermath of devastating military action that Janaway is able to portray so well. He follows the trials and fortunes of people taken into slavery as war spoils, the fate of refugees, the sense of isolation and dislocation that comes when lives are turned upside down. Added to all this is a compellingly drawn fantasy world. There is clearly more to this author than his military experience. 'A few years ago I took an extended sabbatical,' he tells me, 'and ended up in the computer games industry.' It turns out that Janaway worked on the phenomenally successful Jagex, and he now works as a freelance computer games writer having contributed to several successful games including Merlin for Bossa Studios. Janaway freely admits to being, 'a fully paid up geek with a lightsabre' who has a house full of painted metal fantasy soldiers. It isn't hard to imagine him playing out the battles in End of Empire before committing pen to paper. 'It's a gripping read from the first page of the first book,' says Dan Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing. 'Alex not only has the knowledge to bring this war-torn world alive on the page, he has a deft touch that brings its characters vividly to life.' Janaway is a big fan of conventions and is delighted that both his books saw the fantasy and gaming extravaganza, FantastiCon, as their official launch pads. End of Empire: Resistance is officially launched at FantastiCon 2018, an annual fantasy, science-fiction and gaming convention run by Fantastic Books.
