Follow on Google News | ![]() The 5 W's of User Experience [UX]You are a User Experience designer and you don't know what the 5 W's are? Well, it's time to know.
Who, What, Where, When, Why Though UX designers or design companies are aware of these, but not many diligently follow them. For example, if they focus too much on 'What' they somehow tend to lose focus on other W's. In order to capture and deploy powerful User Experience for your product, you need to bring in all the W's into the fold. Let's see what they are and how they can help you in UX designing. What When we say 'what' it does not mean 'what are we building', it means 'what problems are we trying to solve'. Before you even sit down to develop your product, you should about the problem(s) this product is trying to solve? If you've don't know for sure, go back to 'What' and find out. And only then you start to build the product. This shouldn't be a problem. Try to spend more time on the requirement, discuss with the client, clarify the problem as clearly and concisely as possible. Who When you ask 'Who is your customer?' it means who is your target audience. Without knowing your target audience you simply cannot build a product. And how do know who your target customers are? You can find out through User research, Personas, Ethnography, which can help you reveal who your target customer is. Where Where can you improve solutions on existing patterns? You should be asking this question throughout your entire design process. It is very important to understand where the existing patterns failed, so you can figure out spots where you can find scope to improve the product. This process also helps you identify areas in customer journey where you can add relevant content/element to delight them. When When should you begin to get user feedback? This is actually connected with 'Who' and 'Where', and is a bit tricky to gauge when exactly to get user feedback. If you take feedback too early during the development, you are most likely to let users drive your product development. If you do it too late you can end up overbuilding the product. So, when you know 'who' you customers are and 'where' you can improve on existing problems you naturally get a clear answer to when you can start getting user feedback. Why Why does your product solve the problem? If you've already identified the problem, it would be fairly easy to answer this question. To get the answer for the main question, try to answer these questions What weapon your product uses to solve the problem? What strategy does it implement? Does your product take unique approach? If yes, what is that? What are the significances of your product? Through these 5 W's, you can collect a wealth of information on user behavior and personas and use to your advantage in building a powerful and user-centric product.
