But now, there are millions and millions of mobile apps in the market and studies have shown that majority of users abandon app after using just once.
By: Ideaplunge Solutions LLP Here are some of UI design best practices to put into use to improve the overall quality of your mobile app. Dividing the actions Confusing the users is one of the biggest mistakes any UI designer can make. For example, if your app contains long steps and actions, do not give them all in one shot. Break them into sub-actions or sub-tasks. By limiting the actions and tasks, you are actually improving the app's user flow for a particular section. E-commerce apps are a good example to consider of how these actions are divided into small and easy-to-comprehend tasks and action. Unclutter your app Be it any app, a good UI design is all about giving an uncluttered interface to the users. The first step in avoiding clutter is to omit needless graphic elements or content. Cluttering is an arch enemy to good UI designing. Developers tend to be carried away in adding too many elements to impress users. But, it's the opposite what users wants to see in app. A clutter-free layout and free screen space engages users better. Design user flow in a such a way that it shows only what is necessary. Reveal information that is relevant and which makes sense. Let the flow be eye-pleasing and easy to navigate. Interactive and non-interactive elements should be clearly differentiated In a desktop, by rolling over your mouse over you can come to know which element is interactive and which is not. But in an app, its a different game, and the only way a user can come to know is by tapping on them. So, while designing, it is very important to clearly highlight the way those elements behave. And it has to be done in such a way that users to know just by looking at them. Give care to thumb zone Thumbs zones are important aspects that many UI designers tend to overlook. When it comes to thumb zone, as a UI designer, you should consider two things – the way users hold the device and the territory where they tend to swipe with their fingers. There are certain rules you need to follow here: Put regularly accessible elements in areas which is easier for both right-handed and left-handed people. Let the elements be big enough to accomodate the fingers. It should neither be too small, nor too big. Keep options such as delete, erase etc. in the hard areas so that users don't press them accidentally. Sensible and easy navigation Apps with great content and poor navigation can fail miserably. If your user is unable to navigate properly to find the content they need, the whole purpose is lost. Here are a few rules for navigation: Avoid hidden navigations as these can give a hard time of users in finding them. Do not hide menus on individual pages, it might confuse or might make your users lose interest in your app. Use standard navigation patterns. Though they might seem cliched, most users are familiar with them. Many times simple navigation work much better than complicated ones. Make your app load fast The speed of the app depends on various factors. As a UI designer you may have little control over the speed of the application, but there are certain elements, within the scope of UI designing, which can help you improve the speed of the app. Skeleton screens are one of them. If the internet connection is too slow, you just can't help. The skeleton screen is the blank version of a page on which the formation is gradually loaded. You could make these skeleton screens load faster instead of giving users more wait time. Conclusion Great UI designing is not just about visual impact, it is more about user engagement. A good UI design will always be felt by the users. There are several user guidelines for UI, these above mentioned are some of the widely suggested ones. As apps evolve, so do the design guidelines. So, it is important to update yourself with as many guidelines as possible. It will always help you, and won't hurt.
