By: DBS IT AUSTRALIA This is due to a skills shortage which is being seen around the world, but particularly in Australia where even the 457 visa program is unable to keep up with the country's growing need for IT. The digital economy was $79 billion in 2014, and by 2020 we can expect to see it climb to $139 billion. Many organisations are unfortunately forced to send much of their IT work offshore, due to this shortage in IT skills, according to Westpac CIO Clive Whincup. Mr Whincup says that the idea that companies in Australia are sending IT jobs overseas is down to costs is actually a fallacy, as salary gaps rapidly close between the West and East. Instead, the most organisations are offshoring due to a skills shortage, and there simply aren't enough locals to do the job. One of the biggest reasons why Australia has this shortage is due to the lack of interest in STEM subjects, which are science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A survey by Infosys found that Australias are the least confident (when compared to France, South Africa, China, India, the UK, Brazil and Germany) about their technical abilities and job prospects. Less than a fifth of the Australians surveyed had a desire to learn to code, develop data skills or build mobile apps, and only around 50% of Australian year 12 student are studying science, while more than 75% of occupations that have strong growth require employees to have STEM skills. The number of Australian students taking mathematics at school has also been declining for the past twenty years, and almost 25% of students are not taking any math or science units in their final year of high school. It doesn't help that many people are choosing not to join the IT workforce due to the perception that the majority of these jobs are being sent overseas when in fact, the opposite is true. What does this mean for companies needing custom software development in Perth or elsewhere in Australia? A spokesperson from DBS IT Australia had this to say: "While Australia is certainly facing a shortage in professionals who are experienced in IT and custom software development, there are still many companies such as DBS IT available for a variety of IT-related needs, including IT consulting, IT management, software development and more. We hope to see more young people taking STEM subjects at school so Australia can continue to offer the excellent service and software development that it has become known for."
