Four of the largest and most influential car makers have joined forces to build a new electric vehicle charging network for Europe.

Ford, BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen claim that they will "create the highest-powered charging network in Europe", achieving up to 350kW of power – far more than the most powerful existing power points.
The project will be rolled out in 2017, and the companies plan to build an initial network of 400 sites. Three years later, in 2020, the aim is to have "thousands" of charging stations.

Ford has said that situating the new charging points on a range of motorways and main roads will make electric vehicles easier to use on longer road trips.
The American company has also said that electric car charging "is expected to evolve to be as convenient as refueling at conventional gas stations".
The new joint venture will offer super-fast charging to drivers of any electric vehicle equipped with Combined Charging System technology, no matter which manufacturer has built the vehicle.
Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The breakthrough of e-mobility requires two things: convincing vehicles and a comprehensive charging infrastructure. By 2025, our portfolio will include more than ten fully electric passenger cars.

"Together with our partners, we are now installing the highest-powered charging infrastructure in Europe. The availability of high-power stations allows long-distance e-mobility for the first time and will convince more and more customers to opt for an electric vehicle."
