Industries Most Affected By A Power Outage

ADELAIDE, Australia - Sept. 29, 2016 - PRLog -- South Australia has been hit with an unnaturally powerful storm causing the State to lose all power and unfortunately more of this is predicted to occur.

When a natural disaster hits, causing a loss of power, the top five most affected areas are:

1. Manufacturing Industries- These rely on fully-automated production lines. Everything from packing, filling and labelling to quality control is completed by machine. For FMCGs, food and beverage companies, a power outage can result in entire batches of products being discarded.

2. IT Services- Often computer systems crash and data is lost during unexpected natural disasters.

3. Perishable Items- When the power to a residential fridge goes out, a household can lose hundreds of dollars of food and groceries. However, when the same occurs in pharmaceutical industries, petrochemical industries and food processing plants, they result can be several million dollars of lost stock.

4. Control Centres- Traffic signal operations and control centres for railways and airports rely on uninterrupted power in order to do their job. A power outage can impact transportation scheduling (resulting in delays and cancellations) but also put passengers at risk.

5. Medical- Hospitals and surgeries are severely impacted by power outages.

"Health and safety is the most important factor during any natural disaster. People in all parts of the world want and need to hear their family and friends are ok.

"Being able to charge your mobile phone or laptop seems so easy, but during natural disasters such as storms, it's not so easy. After people have moved to safe areas, contact with loved ones is paramount", said Sean Connolly, Managing Director, MyGenerator (http://www.mygenerator.com.au/).

A small back up generator in a family home, which is portable and lightweight is all a family needs to charge their smart phones, laptops and fridge, ensuring they don't lose all their meat and vegetables.

Chris Moyle runs a food truck in Adelaide called Wienerbago (http://www.wienerbago.com.au/). "My three young kids were naturally quite scared during the recent storm and losing power wasn't ideal. We were one of the lucky ones who had prepared for this type of disaster and had a small back-up generator. We were able to charge our mobiles and let people know we were all safe.

"As I run a food truck, keeping all my stock was imperative. The back-up generator was used to keep the fridge going during the black out and thankfully I didn't lose any money through all my food going off".
