Follow on Google News | The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement with Jennifer Stettler ParsonsJoin The Florence Griswold Museum's Assistant Curator, Jenny Parsons as she gives a presentation on American Impressionism and the Garden Movement at the Oliver Wolcott Library on Wednesday, September 7 from 7:00- 8:00 p.m.
At the turn of the 20th century, the canvases of American artists burst to life with the colors and textures of the gardens they saw around them. This new trend in art began in the 1880s as the principles of Impressionism spread beyond France. The American Impressionists' attraction to flowers and gardens can be understood as an extension of the Garden Movement. This national movement had special resonance in Connecticut, where particular women played important roles in both the garden and Progressive political realms. The talk will explore this phenomenon through the themes of American Artists in European Gardens, The Garden as a Work of Art, The Lady in the Garden, The Garden in Winter, and The Urban Garden. Jenny Parsons received a Ph.D. in Art and Architectural History from the University of Virginia and had a two-year pre-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where she finished her dissertation. An expert in late 19th and early 20th-century American Art, Parsons has published on artists such as Arthur Dove and John Sloan. She has held additional positions at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Phillips Collection, the Delaware Art Museum, the University of Virginia and the University Museums at the University of Delaware. All Oliver Wolcott Library events are free and open to the public. Space is limited.
