OXFORD, U.K. - May 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Japanese knotweed is a nationwide problem, with many homeowners and business premises reporting the appearance of the weed as its growing season gets underway. Most recently, however, TP Knotweed have responded to an influx of London-based business, leading to increased operations in and around the capital.

What is Japanese knotweed?

Japanese knotweed is a bamboo-like plant originally imported from the Far East by the Victorians, who valued it for its aesthetic appeal. Victorian horticulturists were quick to propagate the plant, but the weed itself was quicker, spreading out of control. Nowadays, Japanese knotweed can be found almost anywhere in the UK.

Why is it such a threat?

Japanese knotweed is hardy, fast-growing and easily spread, earning it the title of Britain’s most invasive weed. Emerging shoots can reach growing speeds of 3cm per day over the spring and summer, creating plants around 3m tall by the end of the season. The plant’s physical properties are tremendous, enabling it to push through stone, tarmac, concrete and metal piping.

Amateur efforts to contain or remove the plant are almost always ineffective, often leading to the spread of the plant, which regenerates from carelessly discarded roots, shoots and clippings.

What does this mean for London?

London’s densely-populated environment makes it almost impossible for Japanese knotweed to sprout without causing some kind of damage. Water pipes risk damage, as does road integrity and foundational structures, as shoots emerge through even the toughest building structures.

Economic impacts ensue. Japanese knotweed damages property value as readily as it does the street outside, for example. The close proximity of London’s buildings means knotweed can spread quickly from property to property, making it a financial concern for whole neighbourhoods.

Mortgages have even been refused on the grounds of knotweed presence.

How are TP Knotweed helping?

As industry leaders in the removal and eradication of Japanese knotweed and other invasive plant species, TP Knotweed are perfectly placed to tackle the threat of emerging or established knotweed plants professionally.

Their free initial site assessment has proved invaluable to both residential, commercial and construction customers throughout London, giving these customers the confidence to take action and approach TP Knotweed before their suspected knotweed infestations have grown beyond control.

Treatment options vary from control to removal and eradication, all of which are made much easier by catching the knotweed early. Established knotweed infestations can take years of sustained treatment to properly eradicate.

TP Knotweed look forward to expanding their operations further across London and would encourage concerned property owners to get in touch as quickly as possible in the suspected case of knotweed.
