How do I know which career path is the right one for me?

SYDNEY - March 23, 2015 - PRLog -- What do I really want to do with my life? This is the one question that goes through the head of every single living person more than once in their lifespan. It’s a question when thought about results in many people of all ages feeling uncomfortable, confused, unsure and at times stuck at a crossroad. The real question is, when it comes to choosing the “right” career path -  what makes you happy? Here are a few pointers to help you choose a career path that reflects what you find important and what can add meaning to your life.

What gets you excited and motivated?

In life there are always things that will make us excited. Anything from cooking for a group of friends, photography, helping people or writing stories? Why not capitalise on these and use them towards choosing a career path? Don’t base choosing a career on what your parents do or how much money it pays, instead ask yourself is there a job I would do for free?

What do other people say your good at?

What are you known to be good at? Is it playing sports? Being creative? Staying calm in stressful situations? It’s these small things in life that we take for granted that we can use to do bigger and better things with our career. Read between the lines and pick out the common themes and cognitive principles – creativity, enjoying competition, being out doors, working well within a team or teaching somebody something.

What are you happy to sacrifice for a job?

Depending on your age this answer will vary but the one thing you should always keep in mind is everything involves sacrifice. Whether this sacrifice is time, money, family or travel something has got to give in order for you work towards a goal. Choosing a new career – minor or major you need to seriously consider this question.

Find a mentor

Sometimes all it takes in life is some helpful guidance to push us down the right career path. Finding a mentor to let you shadow them for a few days might just be the perfect exercise to help you figure out what you really want career wise.

Try an internship

Internships will not only help get your foot in the door but gives you the opportunity to experience a real hands on industry experience. If you have flexibility with time and salary – go ahead and test a few careers out!

Embrace being vulnerable

Taking on anything for the first time is daunting, but the most important thing is to reassure yourself that everything in life has its first time experiences. Don’t base changing your career path on the basis you might embarrass yourself!

Take initiative

There’s no point sitting on the couch at home, whinging about not having a job, or currently hating the one your in, get up and do something about it. Find your purpose, figure out what’s important to you and assess your values then chase YOUR dream.
